Nuremberg, September 24, 2024 – The 3D-printable humanoid robot pib (printable intelligent bot) is setting new standards in open-source robotics. With the release of a new version, pib now offers not only aesthetic and functional improvements, but also a significantly simplified assembly process and more advanced technology. Developed by Nuremberg-based isento GmbH and a growing community, all 3D printing files, assembly instructions, source code and other resources remain freely available.
New Features at a Glance
- Stronger motors: More powerful motors in the arms allow pib to perform even more precise movements and handle heavier loads.
- Enhanced software: The browser-based control software has been redesigned and now supports natural-language communication with pib, as well as saving and recalling poses and simple graphical programming.
- More stylish design: The new version of pib features a sleeker, more modern appearance. Screws and motors are now concealed within the robot, while loose cables are a thing of the past.
- Simplified assembly: The robot has been redesigned to make assembly easier, allowing users with less experience to build pib with ease.
- Upgraded electronics: The electronics have been upgraded to the new Raspberry Pi 5, significantly increasing the robot’s computing performance.
- Docker support: With the software ecosystem now containerized using Docker, pib’s software can be installed more easily across different platforms. This development was made possible through the contributions of the dedicated community, particularly during one of the project’s recent hackathons.
- Digital twin: A digital twin is being developed for simulations and machine learning, improving accessibility, efficiency and accuracy when optimizing the robot’s functions.
Continuous Development Through Open Source
Both pib’s software and hardware are open source. In addition to the work carried out by isento GmbH, the project thrives on the active involvement of its community. The 3D printing files, detailed assembly instructions, source code, AI skills and an extensive knowledge base are freely available online to anyone interested.
This collaborative approach enables pib and its software ecosystem to be continuously developed and improved.
Bringing Robotics into Education – Learning Through Hands-On Experience
In addition to its popularity among makers, pib is now being used in more than 35 schools and educational institutions. It provides a hands-on learning environment that introduces students to topics such as CAD, artificial intelligence, robotics, physics, bionics and programming across different subjects.
This practical approach not only helps students develop a better understanding of technology, but also encourages creative thinking and problem-solving skills. pib’s quality and innovative approach have already received several awards, including the Civic Innovation Award, the Munich Digital Innovation Award, and most recently recognition as part of the “Jugend forscht” competition.
“The new version of pib improves usability and makes it even easier for people to build their own humanoid robot. Our goal is to make robotics and artificial intelligence accessible to everyone and bring innovative technologies to a wider audience. We are particularly proud that pib is helping to promote learning in schools in a new and dynamic way. A heartfelt thank you goes to our dedicated community and to everyone who supports this project with their passion and expertise.”
