Which filament do you recommend for printing pib?
We officially recommend printing pib entirely in PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol).
Why PETG?
- Heat Resistance: Servo motors naturally generate heat during continuous operation. While PLA can begin to soften and deform at temperatures around 55 °C, PETG easily withstands temperatures up to 75–80 °C.
- Mechanical Strength & Durability: Humanoid robotics involves moving joints and dynamic loads. PETG offers superior impact resistance, strong layer adhesion, and higher flexibility compared to brittle materials.
- Long-Term Joint Stability (No Creep): Screws, nuts, and tensioned components stay tightly fastened in PETG over time, whereas PLA tends to suffer from material relaxation (creep) under permanent mechanical tension.
Can I use PLA?
While you can use PLA for quick initial test prints or purely visual, non-moving covers, we strongly advise against using PLA for functional, moving, or motor-bearing components. To ensure long-term durability and trouble-free operation, PETG is the recommended standard for the entire robot.
Recommended Print Settings for PETG:
- Walls / Perimeters: 3 to 4 walls for high structural rigidity.
- Infill: 20% to 30% (Gyroid or Grid pattern).
- Support: All official pib parts are optimized to print with minimal to no support structures when oriented correctly.
