Can I upgrade an existing pib#4 to pib#5?
Yes! Because pib is a fully modular and open-source platform, you do not need to rebuild the entire robot from scratch to benefit from pib#5 improvements.
What you can upgrade modularly:
- The New Dexterous Hands & Wrist: You can selectively 3D print the redesigned hands and the improved multi-axis wrist joint and attach them directly to your existing pib#4 arm structure.
- Software & Cerebra: Software updates, ROS 2 packages, and Cerebra frontend enhancements can be updated directly via Docker and GitHub without changing any hardware.
- Plug & Power Electronics: The new centralized connector system can be retrofitted, though it may require updating some of your internal wiring and brackets.
Where to find upgrade files:
All new 3D-printable STLs and assembly blueprints for pib#5 components are freely available on our GitHub Repository and in Onshape.
(Note: Our web shop currently offers complete hardware kits—the Makerbox and Edubox. Individual upgrade hardware packs are not sold separately, but all non-printable components can be sourced using the public Onshape BOM).
